The Good Shepherd Alliance currently operates a 20-bed emergency shelter for Women and Children we call Hebron, which is named after a place in the Bible meaning “place of refuge.” Residents enter into our Six Steps to Self-Sufficiency program upon entering the shelter. This program is an intensive case management program geared to helping families in crisis get back to self-sufficiency. Guests may stay up to 89-days in the emergency shelters. Most are able to progress through the program in this time frame.
Hebron has two large “family rooms” for single mothers with 3-7 children and five other bedrooms accommodating 2-3 single women or single mothers with 1-2 children each. Tuesday night is “Campfire” night, when case managers bring craft supplies for mothers and children to enjoy together, while the shelter monitor cooks or a volunteer group provides a large meal for everyone. This is a time of family bonding and creating a family-style atmosphere often missing for homeless families and individuals. Wednesday night offers an optional Bible study, held by a local Pastor’s wife. Friday morning’s case managers hold group counseling and life skills meetings often with a guest teacher. One Friday per month is Friday Night Live, where volunteers come with a meal and activities for women and children. All adults who are guests at Hebron participate in our Six Step to Self-Sufficiency program. It is our goal that no one goes on to another shelter, but find affordable stable housing.
